The Trackstar Plus system is installed in such a way that it integrates with the car's existing immobiliser system. Immobiliser systems are designed to recognise signals sent from a transponder located inside the ignition key: consequently modern cars shouldn't start unless the correct key is used.
However, despite innovations, such as 'rolling code' immobilisers, which change their codes every time the car is locked, thieves still manage to bypass such systems.
Via sophisticated motion sensors Trackstar Plus recognises if a vehicle has moved illegally, and will immediately alert the National Control Centre. These alerts continue every 20 seconds until the vehicle is recovered.
The computer system developed by Trafficmaster utilises the network of Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) to monitor the vehicle's signal and track its direction of travel, speed and location - to an accuracy of five metres.
